GM Foundation’s America’s Thanksgiving Parade Float Connects with Students

The holidays wouldn’t be complete without America’s Thanksgiving Parade, an 86 year tradition.

This year the General Motors Foundation is participating in a big way. The Foundation has sponsored a float in America’s Thanksgiving Parade that is a celebration of education and a showcase of its commitment to investing in America’s youth – the next generation of innovators.

The 17 foot tall by 60 foot long float features a futuristic scene with two students leaving high school and choosing which educational road to take: Science Way, Math Lane, Engineering Road and Technology Highway.

The GM Foundation has many educational partnerships dedicated to helping students pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). One partnership that helped to inspire the float was that of United Way for Southeastern Michigan. The GM Foundation donated $27.1 million to United Way to create a “Network of Excellence” and immerse local students in seven Detroit-area high schools in STEM cirricula and raise graduation rates by 30 percent over five years.

“This float is GM Foundation demonstrating its commitment to the youth and families of our community,” said Michael J. Brennan, United Way for Southeastern Michigan president and CEO. “We are delighted by the forward-looking view of the work we are doing now to transform high schools throughout the tri-county region.”

Designed and built by The Parade Company, the float took six months to be completed, but the waiting and work paid off when the float was recently unveiled by teamGM Cares Volunteers, “Network of Excellence” principals and United Way of Southeastern Michigan representatives. The public will be able to see the float live on WDIV when it makes the trek down Woodward with GM employees from across the company riding on top or marching alongside.

“America’s Thanksgiving Parade will give viewers across the nation a glimpse into the many wonderful facets of Detroit, and the GM Foundation is honored to part of this wonderful showcase of our city,” said Karen Nicklin, manager, GM Foundation.

New Fleet Focused Bi-Fuel trucks expand GM’s Alt Fuel Expertise

Joyce Mattman | Director, Commercial Product and Specialty Vehicles, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations

In any business, success hinges on putting customers first, and this couldn’t be more true at GM Fleet & Commercial. We strive to do this each day by focusing on three simple principles: providing customers with great products, innovative business solutions and exceptional customer service.

My team is focused on new and innovative products to ensure that we meet customer needs. We’ve made some exciting alternative fuel additions to our already extensive product portfolio of more than 40 vehicles.

Our customers want to reduce fuel costs and meet sustainability goals. We listened to their feedback, and during the past two years, we’ve added innovative vehicles like the compressed natural gas (CNG), vans and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vans to our product portfolio, and have started production on our new bi-fuel CNG pickup.

In fall 2010, we announced a CNG option on the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans. CNG is a great solution because it is among the cleanest burning alternative fuels and can cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 25 percent compared to petroleum products. Yesterday, according to CNGprices.com, the price of a gallon of CNG was $2.14, significantly lower than a gallon of gasoline. CNG is independent of the price of petroleum, which enables businesses to better manage their budgets.

We also offer our full-size trucks with a CNG and gasoline bi-fuel option. The bi-fuel Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 HD pickup trucks seamlessly transition between each fuel type. These trucks give customers fueling flexibility, and a combined range of more than 650 miles.

Our Express and Savana 4500 cutaway vans run on LPG, a cleaner burning fuel than petroleum. With 90 percent of the propane used in the US produced domestically, LPG is an important alternative fuel because it can help customers – and the country – reduce dependence on foreign oil. The LPG cutaway chassis is an outstanding product for schools and shuttle bus applications because of the cost savings associated with the fuel.

I am proud to say that GM is the only manufacturer to provide a single-source CNG and LPG van.

GM stands alone in that all of our vehicles meet GM’s strict safety, quality, reliability and durability standards, and are covered by GM’s full warranty. Our alternative fuel offerings are also EPA and CARB certified, providing our customers further peace of mind.

In addition to LPG and CNG options, we offer customers a strong lineup of alternative power vehicles to meet their varying day-to-day business needs, including the Chevrolet Volt and the Malibu Eco, Buick Regal and LaCrosse with eAssist. And new for 2013, the Chevrolet Cruze diesel, and Spark EV (in select states) will offer customers even more solutions.

Joyce Mattman was appointed Director of Commercial Product and Specialty Vehicles at GM Fleet and Commercial Operations in November 2008. Focusing on current product performance, while also developing future products, Mattman’s goal is to incorporate future vehicle features and technologies to deliver practical application for large fleet customers and commercial vehicle buyers.
