Season’s Greetings
By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman
I’d like to thank those who posted their congratulations on the last post about GM taking four of the six finalist spots for North American Car and Truck of the Year. Your support and enthusiasm means a lot to us, and helps us “remain calm” as we wait anxiously for the winners to be announced Jan. 12, 2008, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Malibu, CTS, Enclave and Tahoe Hybrid teams deserve all the credit in the world; in my mind, they’re all winners.
When the auto show rolls around, be sure to check back here for information and updates. We have a host of world debuts that I’m sure will pique your interest, whether you’re a fan of fuel savings or out-and-out performance. We’re going to have something for everyone, and we can't wait to pull the wraps off the concept cars and production vehicles we have lined up this year.
In the meantime, before we assemble here in Detroit for the auto show, there’s this business of the holidays to attend to. I know I’ll be enjoying the time with my family, trying (and likely largely failing) to break the Blackberry habit, at least temporarily. Please take the opportunity to take some time off and enjoy the company of friends and family this season. I hope you all have the happiest of holidays and a terrific 2008. See you then.

Hi Everyone,
I know that I really enjoy all of the comments and opinions that are posted on this blog. I don't agree with all of them, and I don't expect everyone agrees with mine, but they sure get me thinking.
Happy Holidays to All !

After 18 years I am coming back to GM. They built a Red Jewel Enclave CXL for me today over in Lansing. It's the best Christmas present since my daughter was born on Dec 27 a few years ago.
Thanks GM!

The one thing I like best about the automobile industry is it rewards the companies and leaders that make the right decision and prospers the companies that execute the boldest designs. The Buick Enclave is already a winner according to consumers along with the CTS.
New drive train technologies will make the auto industry a little more interesting and perhaps complicated in the coming years, but most of all it will heighten the importance of the industry to our energy independence and environmental concerns. And once again the oil industry gets off scot free with the new energy bill and all the pressure is put on automakers. Well that is not fare. But the bottom line is GM is the most important and fundamental company to the US in so many ways and it is becoming only more important for literally and figuratively where we are going.
Anyway one thing we should think about is how the imports changed the paradigm with the introduction of Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti and how we have a similar opportunity with a relaunch of Pontiac, Buick, and Saab. Just as they did GM can do with these brands and make no less of an impact.
And great brands don't die they may be dormant, but the Enclave proves, a freeze frame but brands are ready to stand when it is their time. Well its GM's time if we seize the opportunity. And we definitely have with the things that happened in 2007 from the unbelievable labor agreement that releases the automakers form the burden of health care, to the fact the the USA has three independent automakers again. Never thought that would happen. And the fact the Jim Press after 30 years finally moved from Toyota to Chrysler, just unbelievable.
What surprises will 2008 hold? Not sure but the ground has shaken under our feet and it appears for the good. So in that light I say again...
May God continue to bless GM with the product savvy of Bob Lutz and the business savvy of Rick Wagoner - he has this year proved himself as the Abe Lincoln of the automobile world.

I am the original owner of a 93 Camaro Z28. I love the new Camaro and 6 months ago I got a NY vanity plate for my 93 which reads CNTW8409. GM is doing a great job. I am so happy with the resurgence of our vital industry. Thank you

Cant wait to see what is planned for Detroit besides CTS-V. I hope there are soome surprises we don't know about yet like a CTS coupe. Those who are paying attention know GM is near the top of the class in design and we continue to expect better and better things.

Recently I went to the auto show in San Francisco, I was surprised to discover that several GM cars were among the best looking ones in the show, including the CTS, Enclave, Malibu (a car with lovely flanks and dashboard), Vue and Astra.
This is a real compliment given that I am an import-loving, BMW 330 Coupe and Acura TL driver/owner. I will consider the Cadillac CTS next time I purchase a car. A couple of years ago, on this blog, I left the message, "Change or die." GM has, the products are very competitive and the company deserves to prosper. Happy Holidays!

I really enjoyed your book "GUTS" !
Now's the time to resurrect the CORVAIR. At least the flat-four engine!
Get MAYS (the NEW BEETLE stylist) to do the redesign.
You know the pitfalls Nader attacked...design them out. Improve the reliability.....
GO FOR IT!!
Merry Christmas!!

Thanks for transforming GM (and to Rick Wagoner and your design teams and your employees). I love my G6 GTP and look forward to many happy years with her. To all out there in Fastlane land, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

it is nice to see some import owners out there are open minded and willing to give credit where it's due. Too bad there arent more people with your attitude. I think many import loyalist would be pleasantly surprised if they actually gave GM products a close look instead of making flawed assumptions.

Merry Christmas GM!
I just wanted to let you know that I've been a longtime Honda/Acura/Toyota buyer who is seriously considering a GM car this time around. Your styling, performance, efficiency and quality have improved by light years and I must say that you are now on the verge of regaining your industry leadership on those fronts. If you make great cars at a fair price, the marketshare will come. Your re-entrenchment efforts are beginning to pay off.
Lately it has been a wise practice for GM to avoid the overt penny-pinching of the past, to produce a stylish, quality product which will last. In the long run, this minimizes the discounts and incentives you are forced to offer to clear the dealer lots.
I tell my friends that you are becoming the Apple Computer of the auto industry. You have re-ignited the "cool" factor in your product line. At this point, I would seriously consider working for your company. Keep up the great work!
I can't wait to take test drives of your cars in 2008!

Hey Bob one more after Christmas wish, one that all will agree, how about Bluetooth mid production in the CTS at least? I'm waiting before I buy but don't know how much longer.
Thanks Bob, aka; Santa

Mr. Lutz,
Just picked up my 2008 Silverado LTZ and a nice product. I echo many of the sentiments above and wish you, your family and extended GM family a successfull year. Continue the path of allowing bold designs and quality American built products set the world standard again.
Respectfully,
Loyal GM Customer.

sheth,
some of us import buyers are open-minded but we are also brutally honest: the astra has a wimpy engine when the honda civic is a cutting edge car with unapologetically WORLD CLASS engine. This consumer does care about (internal) GM excuses for mediocrity...your internal corporate politics aren't interesting to me. I want the best product, period. 30 million Californians think like me. You can run (to the country club in Grosse Pointe)but you can't hide (in this global economy)...for better and for worse. Savvy GMers, keep up the good fight!

Bob:
Keep the momentum going with more great products coming our way, and continue the good work and updates on the Volt project.
Remember...Always under-promise, and always over-deliver!
Best regards!

I did my part in helping Cadillac spread its image. I published questions on Yahoo Answers to ask readers about the ULC V12 coupe. You can read it

Really enjoyed Robert Lutz on "Wait Wait" today & after reading a little of his resume have to raise my glass to him for being such a great sport. Also, for having anything whatsoever to do with the '63 Pontiac Tempest, if he did. I adore the lines of that car. If he didn't, it doesn't matter. He's cool. I would give a lot to have his energy.

The CTS is the best Cadillac ever. Simply amazing.

Joe,
you are demonstating a total lack of knowledge about the vehicles you are criticizing. First of all the civic makes 2 more hp than the "wimpy" Astra engine you are criticizing. Secondly, no one is asking you to accept second class products and to suggest that people who don't live in CA have lower standards in terms of knowing what makes a competent vehicle is pretty arrogant. I would suggest that many CA residents are totally incapable of accepting that GM makes competitive vehicles because they are too self righteous to acknowledge that they are out of touch with the current realities of the automotive industry. The record recalls of Toyota and CR's decison to stop automatically recommending its vehicles should prove to any "open minded" person that import brands are not infallable. Furthermore, the awards and accolades garnered by recent GM products like the CTS, Aura, Malibu and Enclave should tell you GM isnt making 2nd class vehicles and those who would open their minds would likely be surprised. Out of the mainstream automakers GM is rising to the top of the heap in design and powertrains. They have a ways to go when it comes to small vehicles in terms of product range and fuel efficiency but overall things are looking good. Personally I don't endorse mediocre design or overcharging for plebian vehicles that supposedly are worth more because of their manufacturer's quality reputation and thus Toyotas and Hondas arent really for me. Mediocrity comes in many forms and most of what I see from those brans is quite mediocre in design, handling, value for the dollar and material quality.

Eliminate glaring GM flaws like the overly shallow trunks in the Aura/Malibu and dumb spongy styrofoam steering wheels in Saturns and the world is yours!!!

Hi Bob,
Not a Happy New Year for me. A mouse ate your 2007 Tahoe and disabled it, costing me $440 to repair, and I just bought this truck from you 3 months ago. With all the technology everyone is praising you with in this chain, you'd think GM could figure out how to out-smart a mouse. But since you've known about this problem for decades...I guess not. Wow, some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Will never buy a GM product again.

I'm grateful to have been a spectator of the change that has been taking place in GM. I'm impressed by the products and even more so that GM has been able to turn such a large ship within a relatively short amount of time and deliver on promises.
Keep up the great work!
