More on the Camaro

This just in: Spotted on The GM test track, this early, preproduction Camaro Coupe. The new Camaro is quickly evolving into final form, but some of the details you see here (such as the headlamp design) may change before production begins this year. -Alicia Dorset, blog editor

Looking good. Cant wait to see the finished product!
Anthony
I think I’ll start buying more GM stock
Tanner
Looks good. I’m holding my breath on the interior. The shots I have seen so far are not good. Let’s hope they change it before production.

Hopefully the interior we’ve seen before is preproduction aswell, but overall, looking good in the exterior department.

Working for a GM dealer this would be a shot in the arm for us. I have always been a performance nut and I do believe the new Camaro will not be a dissapointment

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
This car is freaking great!!!
I’m fairly confident that certian pieces weren’t cut-out because it’s only a prototype - BUT I LIKE WHAT I SEE!!!
Home Run, General; You’ve hit a gorgeous home-run!
Oh, and lets NOT corrupt this blog with interior comments, please - learning from our mistakes, yes?
Did I say that I love this car?
Jason
I can’t wait to see and hear these beasts on the street. Looking good GM! Please produce something that will compete with the high powered Mustangs out here.

WOW! Looks great. Being a long time Chevrolet fan and a multiple Camaro owner, I can’t wait for this car! Very exciting. What’s even more exciting is GM new focus on higher quality and design. Many cars have been so ugly and boring design wise for the last 20 years. Finally exciting aggressive design, great performance and high quality are becoming available.

Holy cow, I am really liking what I’m seeing here!
So true to the concept!
Great job Team Camaro!
Keep up the good work on this car, and thanks for sharing yet another awesome picture.

ps… might wanna fix the spelling of “Camaro” in the second sentence there.

The new Camaro is BEEEEEEAUTIFUL!!!!!Now the agonizing wait and anticipation before I have one in my garage!
Tracy
Looks fantastic. Please don’t change the hoodlamps or anything else! It’s looks awesome the way it is.
Ben
I’m liking that exterior - but guys you gotta do something about that interior. It looks hideous. There’s nothing wrong with having ‘touches’ of retro styling here and there - but nobody wants to see a ‘69 dashboard dropped into a brand new car - it just looks tacky with those gauges - they’re so big they look like I could stick my arm in one and it would take my blood pressure ;-P
bluebaby
Awsome car but Mr. Lutz help with the dealer showrooms, you have so many beauts coming very soon but the showrooms are HORRID here in so cal., make the experience of purchase feel good again from the surroundings of a up to date enviroment at least.
thanks
Nick
The interior is pre-production, and I hope they kepe those gauges just how they are, they’re awesome.
The headlamps are just temp stand-ins, the production ones aren’t ready yet, same reason why the car doesn’t have a spoiler.
And despite the non-functional hoodscoop, it looks awesome.
KC
Blah blah blah. What engine is going in it?
Kristovar
Will the hood scoop be functional? I don’t want some Toyota touch like on the FJ and Tundra with their ridiculous nonfunctional scoop.
Steve
Please, please, please change the interior. I am not referring to the material or the big gaps. I am referring to the current design.
Mr.Pantic
Ed & Bob,
Please… PLEASE make a RIGHT HAND SIDE version for us in Australia! That is the least you guys can do since we’ve practically made the car here in Melbourne for you. I would be extremelly dissapointed if I end up having to dish out AU$80,000 (which is like US$75,000) for a Camaro that is going to be sold in the United States for US$25,000? And have to import it convert it and have it cost more then 100,000?! No way! If we are sending you guys re-badged crushing Holden Commodores, well its only fair that the Melbourne engineered Camaro is sold here too, with a very reasonable price-point.
P.S. you can leave the chevy badge and Camaro emblem as I wouldn’ have it any other way.
Fair is fair…
Thanks.

Dear Camaro development team,
Despite gas prices and concerns about the environment, I’ve completely committed myself to a Z/28 or SS Camaro (whichever is the lower line of the two but with a V8 engine). I was initially thinking of just going with the V6 Camaro. Why did I change my mind? Because as I look as these pictures, there is no way - NO WAY - a car that looks that hot should have any less than 8 cylinders. My mind is already made up. I don’t care what gas costs - you only live once, and I can’t afford a Corvette. Seeing these pictures makes me crave the feel of balls to the floor, gut smashing torque. Looking at these pictures really does make one throw common sense out the window. All I ask is that you make enough V8s to quell dealers appettite for markups.
V8, 6 speed manual, and I’ll take it in silver with black interior with orange stiching - just like the 2006 concept.
Long live Camaro!

Love the external look of car, but not the interior shots I’ve seen on the internet so far. Please, please, please….change the “layout” of the interior. It must either be identical to the concept in regards to the gauge placement or taken in a direction that resembles the Cadillac CTR. That bulge that houses the radio is hideous and must go. The shifter stick is weak and the four analog gauges should not be stacked on top of each other.
And what happened to the leather/vinyl interior and stitching on the dash? That must return in order to give the car a great look. Keep in mind that in a convertible, when the top comes down you want to impress, not be embarrassed. The stitching along the dash and side gave the car character and made the interior quality resemble more expensive models such Ferrari or Lamborghini.
Let me close by also requesting quality seat’s with stitching like the concepts have or at lease make them a factory option. And allow the aftermarket to get one of your vehicles to make numerous performance and custom accessories. This alone will ensure the longevity of the Camaro as it did for its competition, the Mustang. It will also keep GM from having to do too much.
Robert S
I just hope that the sale price can be kept below the $30000 mark on the base camaro, otherwise GM will not be able to compete with the mustang at all.
Robert Tessman
Ok - so far so good - now where’s the Firebird…?!

I just saw the photograph of the new Camaro interior in Automotive News, what the heck happened, the original interior was great in the concept, the production version looks like the cheap crap from 1980’s GM cars? Our hero who is changing GM design said that the styling would stay the same, what happened, exterior looks great, but the dash is terrible, and what happened to the staggered gauges as in the concept center console, that was cool…the new design looks like an add on to fill in space! DON’T RUIN THIS FINE DESIGN WITH CHEAP COMPONETS INSIDE! Bob, SAY’S WHO? You’re the boss, fix it!
Bk
I love the new camaro design. I really would like to be tempted to buy an american car. My camaro wish is that it handles! I hope the dev team knows the importance of not only being able to smoke some mustangs at stoplights, but also to be able to hang with the europeans in the twisties. Great job, can’t wait to test drive one.

* AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! CANCEL MY ORDER!!!
Waiting 10 years for this???!!! You gotta be kidding? Is this some cruel joke?
You can see they went to their scrooge penny pincher supplier for low quality plastics. The steering wheel is from one of those rides you see infants riding on in the shopping mall.
Is this a competition with Chrysler: Worst Interior of the Year Award?
Cadi did win Interior of the Year Award. Just do a carbon copy cut & paste! Its that easy. Who’s gonna complain sitting in a Cadi interior?
GM - Please, there is plenty of competition. Use HI-Quality Plastics PLEASE. Look at Acura & Lexus. Make it COMFORTABLE. Entry & Egress {This is why Mustang sales outperform because its easier to get into & out of}
Follow BMW for dash/form/button layout [OMIT iDrive]
Independant Suspension ALL AROUND!
Thank you.
George
Please don’t make the interior look like you did not want to spend an extra $100 Dlls use high quality plastic.
RonPaul2008.com
PLEASE redo that interior — it is UGLY — give us something w/some better technology more like the CTS, and throw in an HD Radio, GPS would be nice too… I cannot stand the ugly gauges and tiny electronic displays — who puts gauges by the shifter like that? Down-right ridiculous for 2009!
I hope some changes are made to compete w/Toyota’s FT-HS which is said to be going production around the same time…
Thanks!

COME ON GUYS, THE CONCEPT CAMARO WAS DROP DEAD STUNNING. THE BEST CAMARO I’VE SEEN SINCE THE EARLY 90′S. LETS KEEP THE STYLE COMPLETELY THE SAME. INSEAD OF ALL THE POLISHED ALUMINUM, USE PAINTED PLASTIC. LET’S KEEP THE ALUMINUM FUEL DOOR ON THE UPPER FENDER. LET’S NOT USE THAT UGLY HEADLIGHT DESIGN AND I WILL BUY ONE FOR SURE. ALL I THINK ABOUT RECENTLY IS THE NEW CAMARO, AND I CAN’T WAIT TO GET ONE. REMEMBER ONE THING, THIS NEW CAMARO MUST REIGNITE THE HERITAGE THAT’S MISSING ON THE ROADS TODAY. THE HEART OF ONE OF THE BEST MUSCLE CARS KNOWN TO MOST CAR ENTHUSISTS. MANY OF THEM WILL BE VERY DISSAPPOINTED IF THE NEW CAMARO IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM THE CONCEPT. I THINK THAT IT WILL ALMOST DEFINITLY REDUCE SALES OF THE CAR. I’VE BEEN WAITING SINCE 1992 FOR A HOT LOOKING CAMARO. WHAT I ALWAY’S SAY IS A MUSCLE CAR SHOULD BE BOUGHT BRAND NEW. IF THIS CAR GETS DESTROYED IN THE MAKING I WILL NOT GET ONE, SO WILL MANY OTHERS. I DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO GET A FORD MUSTANG OR DODGE CHALLENGER, HOPE YOU GET THIS BEFORE IT TO LATE. HOPE TO SEE THE NEW GREATEST EVER CAMARO IN MY DRIVEWAY IN ‘09.

So, is this going to be another Chevy we don’t get to see Down Under?
Or does GM not market these cars to overseas buyers? V8 passion is alive and well in these parts too, you know.

In general, it’s gonna be a beautiful car. I’m not a fan of the grille and headlamps. My favorite ‘69 model was the RS/SS version. If you don’t offer the 3 stripe headlamp covers, I’m gonna request a revised grille from an aftermarket supplier. Unfortunately, the sleek interior of the concept has become bulbous and unappealing. You’ve already nixed the true hardtop design, please be true to the concept, you had it right. Don’t ruin your chances to re-invigorate GM’s lackluster designs by listening to the bean-counters. Consumers will pay for quality and reliability.

Missing are the two Headlamps (LED). Also the fuel inlet and cap are missing on the top left rear fender, like on the concept. Character is missing without. I also hope we get the LS3,LS7,LS9 & LSA engines with the Tremec 6060 6-spd manual transmission. The CTS-V setup would be nice to prevent tire hop.

Waiting! For Mine.

Overall the prototype was a nice take on the original (I’m old enough to remember it fondly). But there is something about this current trend of high beltlines that turns me off slightly. But, what really has turned me off are the revised headlamps ‘for production’. This is an improvement? Ugh!

Let the Pony Car races begin . . . again. In that NASCAR has stumbled into an era of common bodied “race cars” like Camry and Fusion, I think it’s time for a new series. Why not re-create the Pony Car / Trans Am wars of the late 60’s? Most importantly, the only players allowed would be those companies and even nameplates that raced back then. Mustang, Challenger, Camaro. Period. Corporate sponsored or not, this 5.0 liter engine road race series would be a blast for those of us who remember our past. Plus we wouldn’t have to deal with the silliness of things like the Camry “race car.” I’d watch one of these races over any of the NASCAR parades any day of the week. This sort of racing is likely inevitable- be it a new series altogether or via an existing race program like SCCA. I can’t wait.
Rum Doodle
~ Mustang, Challenger, Camaro. Period.
I’d include the Javelin and Barracuda.
Robert
Exceptionally great looking car, though the biggest disapointment is the long wait getting this car into production and on the sales floor.. Been seeing the design for so long now it is losing its awe,
weve been so hyped for so long I for one am losing interest and worry that GM has just missed the mark on getting this car out fast enough.
Jeff
I would really like to see the option of hidden headlights like the ‘67-’69 Rally Sports. That’s a selling point for me. The grill and subtle headlights of the early preproduction model slightly recall the hidden headlight theme.
Matt A
Yeah, it looks great! Will a working man be able to afford it? I can get a Ford Mustang GT decked out for under 30 grand. The Camaro, as far as I remember, was SUPPOSED to be a sports car for the “average” guy. I’m waiting to see the sticker before I make up my mind. However, I have a feeling…..I just have this feeling….

I am wondering what is the peliminary life span for the camaro if you fall short in the first 3 years of new production in 2010 physical year, because what may happen is the camaro should be limited production trial for a 3 year period, also including funding being available for production labor.
Ben
Friday March 20th, i heard a rumor that ripped my heart out! Only 5 days into production and i hear the Z28 is on indefinite hold. I have been waiting all these years anticipating owning one of these babies only to have my dreams squashed. “Build it and they shall sell” and there will be peace and harmony again.
Adam Denison
Ben,
There are currently no plans for a Z/28 right now. But 426 hp on the V8 is nothing to scoff at!

I guess this is yet another reason GM is struggling. You will give us what you want us to have, and not what we desire. People will not only pay more for what they desire, they will realize a company interested in improving its image on putting the customer infront of the investor. Oh well, what can I say.
I would also like to hear more on what the consumer thinks of this restructured ride. I love the MoPar work on the Challenger, looks kind of late 60s-early 70s on steriods, as does the Mustang look kind of 60s on steriods. I had to look extremely hard at the Camaro to see any previous model retor look. Is it the tail lights? Man I paid good money to have the old Camaro, and still love the RS, and SS from the late 60s, but the new one, I don’t see it.
Oh well more of what you want us to have, and not necessarily what were desire. Back to spending my money on my 68 Chevelle I guess.
