Pontiac Roars Forward

2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe
Jim Bunnell
Buick-Pontiac-GMC General Manager
If there’s anything better than introducing a new product, it’s introducing three new products. And if there’s anything better than introducing three new products, it’s introducing three new products that show Pontiac’s getting its mojo back.
At the New York Auto Show today, Pontiac took the wraps off some new members of the Solstice and G8 families.
First up was the Solstice Coupe, which takes its classic design of the roadster to another level. The original convertible is still the top selling car in its segment and we think that the added all-season capabilities of the coupe, in either the base or turbo-charged GXP model, will just extend its appeal. Plus, a removable top panel can still provide an open-air driving experience.

2009 Pontiac G8 GXP
The G8 GXP is, quite simply, the Pontiac performance flagship. We intend to build on the incredible reception the G8 sedan and G8 GT have already received by upping the excitement quotient with a 400+ hp LS3 V8 engine and an optional six-speed Tremec manual transmission. The G8 is truly a product of GM’s global muscle ---a European-inspired performance sedan with American attitude built in Australia.
2010 Pontiac G8 Sport Truck
Speaking of muscle, we know that performance can be measured in different ways, so we’re also introducing the G8 sport truck, a segment-bending vehicle with sports car DNA and truck-like cargo capabilities. Need to haul six-foot long items or tow a 3,500-pound trailer? The G8 sport truck can handle it. It also can haul in a different way … from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds.
The one thing we want to change about the sport truck is its name. “Sport truck” works fine as a description, but it just doesn’t convey the emotion that this new G8 will create. So, we’re inviting the public to submit their suggestions at www.pontiac.com/namethiscar and the winning name will be announced April 15.
All three Pontiacs introduced here in New York will be on the streets within 18 months.

VIDEO: A Redefining Moment at the Geneva Motorshow

By Keith Childs
GM Europe Communications
The Opel Meriva Concept, a GM world premiere at the Geneva motorshow, was one of the highlights of our press conference and got a lot of people talking.
There’s an array of patented innovations developed by GM/Opel engineers. The innovative FlexDoors are rear-hinged rear doors that swing open 90 degrees towards the back of the car. It’s something you have to see to really understand, so we videoed them in action.
At the same time, we asked Hans Demant, Opel’s Managing Director and GM Europe Vice President in charge of engineering, Alain Visser, GM Europe’s Chief Marketing Officer and designers Andrew Dyson and Kenjiro Tajima to tell us more about the innovation behind the concept.
Afterwards, I was lucky enough to catch a few minutes with Chief Designer Andrew Dyson, who led the Meriva design team and get his view on the reaction of people during the press days. What he was hearing over and over again was why hasn’t this been done before? With rear doors and front doors that open independently there’s a clear feeling that this is groundbreaking — and it will redefine the segment just like the Flex7 seating introduced on the Opel Zafira redefined interior flexibility and the monocab segment.
What really gave him a buzz was not just the media reaction, but something else. All the auto designers are here at the show, they all know each other and they always check out the competition. Traditionally highly critical and not easily impressed, they were clearly surprised by the quality of the show car, the finish and how close the concept looks to a production vehicle.

Our Next-Generation GM Hybrid
By Tom Stephens
Group Vice President GM Powertrain
As Rick Wagoner announced this morning at the Geneva auto show, we have a strong new addition to our portfolio of hybrid technologies. The next-generation GM Hybrid system is an affordable hybrid option that will be nearly three times more powerful than the one currently found on the Saturn Vue Green Line, the Saturn Aura Green Line and the Chevy Malibu Hybrid.
We’ll introduce the system in North America in 2010, where you may eventually see it in more than 100,000 of our vehicles annually. The new system is based on a lighter but more powerful lithium-ion battery than the nickel metal hydride one we use today. The lithium-ion battery will be supplied by Hitachi and is paired with a new motor generator to provide more electric assist for a longer period of time. That will increase fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions. Those two goals, as you know, go hand in hand, because burning less fuel puts less CO2 into the air.
As in the current GM Hybrid system, it is belt-alternator-starter hybrid technology. The GM Hybrid system is and will remain the most affordable of our hybrid options. We’re showing the next-gen hybrid system in Geneva with a Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept vehicle, equipped with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with FlexFuel capability. While we have no current plans to build that concept, we do anticipate offering the next-gen hybrid system with a wide range of engines and vehicles, and a six-speed automatic transmission in some applications.
Another of our hybrid options is the highly capable rear-wheel drive 2-Mode Hybrid, found in our Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, and starting this year, in the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra crewcabs.Later this year we’ll also begin selling the first front-wheel drive variant of the 2-Mode Hybrid in the 2009 Saturn Vue Green Line.
The next few years will see many new options in our gas-friendly portfolio: In January, we announced that the Saturn Vue will be offered as a plug-in hybrid, possibly as early as 2010, becoming the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market. We’re hard at work on our E-Flex extended-range electric vehicle program with the Chevy Volt. And we’ll have more than 100 fuel cell Chevrolet Equinox SUVs in normal consumers’ driveways this year, so that they can be thoroughly tested under everyday driving conditions. These fuel-cell-powered SUVs use pure hydrogen for fuel and emit only water as exhaust.
Let there be no doubt that we at GM remain committed to increasing the fuel efficiency and reducing the CO2 emissions of all our vehicles. Your thoughts, as always, are welcome.

The Future of Fuel-Efficient Trucks On Display in Chicago

2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid
By Jim Bunnell
GMC general manager
This week at the Chicago Auto Show, GMC unveiled two vehicles that point to a more fuel-efficient future for trucks: The 2009 Sierra Hybrid and the Denali XT concept vehicle.
The Sierra Hybrid represents the first look at a new production model that goes on sale later this year, while the Denali XT – also a hybrid – supposes a new, more efficient direction in truck design. Both are indicative of GMC and General Motors’ commitment to improving fuel economy and reducing the reliance on petroleum.

GMC Denali XT Concept
GM’s patented two-mode hybrid system (the same in the Yukon Hybrid that is already in production) is the motivating force in the Sierra Hybrid, giving it a 25-percent improvement in overall fuel economy. As impressive as that sounds, it is city driving where it really shines. With all-electric drive up to about 30 mph, the Sierra Hybrid can deliver up to 40 percent improved fuel economy in city driving.
And, no, the truck doesn’t sacrifice capability for mpg. It has a payload rating of more than 1,400 pounds and a towing rating of 6,100 pounds. That’s a fuel-efficient reality that will be in the showrooms later this year.
I’ve driven the Sierra Hybrid and as good as the real-world fuel economy gains are, it’s the overall driving experience that I think will impress people the most. Without getting into the minutia of the hybrid system’s details, the thing you’ll notice from any seat in the cab is smoothness and quietness. I’m not talking about the standard new-car boilerplate-style smoothness and quietness claim, but a new definition of driving smoothness and quietness in a truck.
The hybrid transmission is a continuously variable type, so the feeling of torque just keeps building and building, with no abrupt changes between gears. Integration of the hybrid system on the Sierra is seamless – the battery pack is located beneath the rear seat and is warranted for eight years/100,000 miles – and perceptible only in what it lacks: Noise.
As for the Denali XT concept, its design and construction were spearheaded by GM’s global design center in Australia. It’s an all-new take on truck design, but we wouldn’t put a GMC badge on the grille if it were just a pretty face. We estimate it will tow about 3,500 pounds and deliver about 50 percent better fuel economy than other comparable small pickups.
The Denali XT uses a new, smaller-displacement 4.9-liter version of the famous small-block V-8. To save fuel, the engine features direct injection and GM’s cylinder-deactivating Active Fuel Management; it is also E85-capable. Further fuel efficiency comes via its pairing with the two-mode hybrid system, making it GM’s first E85-capable hybrid.
Yes, the hybrid propulsion system enables efficient performance, but so does the Denali XT’s overall construction. Rather than a traditional body-on-frame configuration, this truck has a unitized body structure that minimizes overall mass. This does not mean the Denali XT is the reincarnation of a car with cargo bed on the back, as has been suggested already on a few blogs. It was engineered as a truck, with a crew cab configuration, high cowl and seating positions, a sturdy chassis and a Midgate passage between the cargo area and passenger area. Its V-8 engine also enables the effortless hauling and towing expected of a truck.
Unstable fuel prices are a reality, but the need for strong, capable trucks hasn’t waned. I believe the Sierra Hybrid and Denali XT demonstrate attainable, real-world solutions. For the customer who needs a truck for work and wants better fuel economy, we’ve got the solution in the Sierra Hybrid – and no other manufacturer can match it. As for a production model like the Denali XT, my crystal ball isn’t that clear, but we’ll be closely watching and listening to the reaction it generates at Chicago and other auto shows.
Check out more pictures of the Sierra Hybrid and the Danali XT at Flickr.

Traverse-ing Our Portfolio

2009 Chevrolet Traverse
By Ed Peper
General Manager, Chevrolet
We’re on a roll at Chevrolet. I’m sure you’ve all started to see the new Malibu on the streets wherever you live because we can’t keep them on the dealer lots at this point. We’re showing everyone we can produce a car at Chevrolet that competes head-to-head with Camry and Accord.
We’re already leaders on the truck side, and continue to raise the bar in that area – most recently evidenced with the upcoming Silverado Hybrid.
Now we’ve got the perfect vehicle to “traverse” our portfolio – the all-new 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. (And for those of you Michiganders reading this, it’s pronounced “Tra-VERSE” – not like Traverse City, Mich.)
We really think this crossover fills a sweet spot in our lineup and will be a great addition to the best-selling brand in America.
Some might ask, “Why another crossover?” And the answer is clear – the crossover segment is one of the fastest-growing segments in the industry. Since 2003, crossover volumes have doubled, and its industry share has increased to almost 5%. This is significant in an industry that has been shrinking overall, and the segment’s growth is expected to continue in the coming years.
There’s no question the Traverse will benefit from the success of its siblings at Saturn, GMC and Buick. The Outlook, Acadia and Enclave have established GM as a leader in the crossover segment.
The Traverse builds on this success with its great utility, surprising room and highest safety ratings. And when launched later this year, it will benefit from a new direct-inject 3.6L V-6 that will enable the best of both worlds for our customers: horsepower expected in the 285+ range, combined with what we expect to be segment-leading fuel economy.
And I think, as you can see in the photo, the Traverse is purely Chevy and darn-good-looking, too. When you’re able to catch it in person, I think you’ll be even more struck by its good looks.
Check out lots more photos of the Traverse on Flickr.

Orders for Hybrid Buses Will Double GM-Allison Fleet
By Tom Stephens
GM Group Vice President GM Powertrain and Global Quality
When someone says "hybrids," you probably think about passenger cars and trucks. They get the lion's share of attention. But the benefits of hybrid technology aren't limited to personal vehicles. We can also drive environmental benefits by providing cleaner mass transit options - and with the cost of petroleum somewhat unstable or unpredictable for the foreseeable future, many municipalities are looking more closely at hybrid technology. And that's where we come in.
Today at the Washington Auto Show, we announced major orders for GM-Allison hybrid buses, totaling up to 1,732 buses to public transit authorities in Washington, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. These orders will more than double the number of GM-Allison hybrid-powered buses on the road, to more than 2,700 buses in more than 80 cities.
As you may know, GM-Allison has been building hybrid transmissions since 2003, and we announced earlier this month the 1,000th bus equipped with GM-Allison hybrid technology will be delivered to Las Vegas.
These buses have driven more than 14 million miles in service for public transportation agencies from Germany to Yosemite National Park.
We’ve taken that proven technology and scaled it down to our 2-Mode Hybrid system, which is now available in the 2008 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid, the industry’s only full-size hybrid SUVs. And, as I said last week at the North American International Auto Show, we’ll introduce the first front-wheel drive version of the 2-Mode Hybrid system in the 2009 Saturn Vue Green Line 2-Mode Hybrid.
Whether it’s passenger vehicles or transit buses, this hybrid technology significantly improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions while maintaining the vehicle performance and capability expected by our customers. For example, Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon Hybrid SUVs offer up to eight-passenger seating and 6,200 lbs. towing capability, with a 50% improvement in city fuel economy.
The GM-Allison hybrid-powered buses have saved transit systems millions of gallons of diesel fuel, with up to a 75% improvement in fuel efficiency over conventional buses, according to a 2006 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
In fact, we estimate that the 1,732 hybrid bus deliveries we’re announcing today will save 2.4 million gallons of diesel fuel per year. That’s enough fuel to fill 300 tanker trucks, and save 6,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year. Moreover, because of their clean diesel technology the buses produce far less NOx, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter than the traditional city buses you might be used to seeing.
So the next time you’re in Seattle, Washington D.C., Philadelphia or Minneapolis-St. Paul, take a ride in one of the GM-Allison hybrid-powered buses. I’d like to hear what you think of them.

Saturn Plugs In, Takes Off

Saturn Green Line Vue
By Jill Lajdziak, Saturn General Manager
As one of the industry’s fastest growing brands in 2007, Saturn clearly is plugged into the demands of our customers. With the slate of vehicles that Saturn debuted today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, I am convinced we will remain “plugged in” for years to come.
Great design and environmentally friendly technology have become hallmarks of the Saturn brand. When you look at the vehicles we introduced this week, you can see we are sticking with that winning formula.
The 2009 Vue Green Line 2 Mode Hybrid will provide at least a 50 percent increase in combined city and highway fuel economy while maintaining impressive performance and utility. We are going to keep working on improving the fuel economy numbers between now and the start of production, and we expect the city mileage to be really impressive.

Saturn Vue Plug-In
The Vue Plug-In Hybrid vehicle demonstrates our commitment to build the industry’s first regular production plug-in, possibly as early as 2010. With the potential for an all-electric range at slow speeds of up to 10 miles, the plug-in version of the Vue could double the fuel economy of any SUV currently on the road.
The Flextreme concept vehicle illustrates our continued design collaboration with GM’s Opel brand and features GM’s breakthrough E-Flex electric propulsion technology, which provides up to 34 miles of all-electric, emissions-free range. The vehicle is powered by electric motors and a lithium-ion battery that can be plugged in and recharged at a household outlet. On the road, a clean and efficient 1.3L turbo-diesel onboard engine generates additional electricity to replenish the battery and extend the vehicle’s driving range.

Saturn Flextreme concept
Our performance last year was strong with sales increasing by 6 percent, while the industry as whole was down 3 percent. With products like our new hybrids shaping the future of Saturn, we will build on that success and reach even greater heights. Take a look at these three vehicles and let us know what you think.

The Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept
Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept
General Motors Vice President for Global Design Ed Welburn just gave a speech unveiling the Cadillac CTS Coupe concept car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Here are some highlights from his speech:
- “As the design team was completing the development of the CTS sedan, the creative ideas continued to flow. Our designers had a great idea for a CTS coupe. The design quickly progressed from a hot sketch to a wonderful full-size clay model. It looked so good that we had to build it!”
- “The CTS Coupe concept builds on the success of the CTS sedan, but is an expression of the ‘Art & Science’ design language that is even more dramatic. The body shape is crisp, lean, and has a lot of energy. The bold front end is straight from the CTS sedan and the rear is just as striking as the front. The rear has a strong centerline crease, and aggressive proportions and plan view sweeps.”
- "The interior is based on the production sedan, but we used this opportunity to explore new materials, colors and finishes. I was so excited about the seat design that I had an extra seat designed to display as a piece of artwork at the Design Center."
- "In terms of performance, the CTS Coupe concept offers the flexibility to accept a broad engine range of gasoline and diesel engines for international markets."
Click over to GM's media web site for more information about the CTS Coupe concept, including a complete list of specifications and comments from the car's designers. And check out Flickr for more photos of the CTS Coupe concept.

The Saab 9-4X BioPower Concept
More about GM's biofuels partnership with Coskata, on the FYI blog
Saab 9-4X BioPower concept
Saab is on the move.
I hope with what you have seen today that you agree.
Sixteen Swedish aircraft engineers showed the world their remarkable innovative spirit when they introduced its first automobile concept more than 60 years ago, now know as the Ur Saab.
That same innovative spirit endured when Saab introduced the industry’s first turbo-charged engine for regular cars 30 years ago.
And here we are today at the North American International Auto Show proudly showing our innovative Saab 9-4X BioPower Concept. Our ambition as you may know has always been to expand our global portfolio and, although realizing we’re not the first, I believe the timing is right to share with you our vision of what a premium Swedish Saab Crossover could look like.
A little less than two years ago the Saab Aero X Concept Car surprised car enthusiasts around the world and showed more than words could say where we wanted to take this unique Scandinavian brand. It is therefore not a coincidence that the 9-4X Biopower Concept shares a lot of the Aero X design language that so many of you have come to appreciate. It’s neither a surprise given today’s discussion on climate change that this concept vehicle features our unique BioPower concept making it capable of running on E85 while at the same time delivering more power. Typical Saab, I would say. And it’s not without success; The Saab BioPower range has made us the No. 1 selling brand of E85 flex-fuel cars in Europe.
Of course this business is all about people. Anthony Lo (who led the design team for the Aero X) brought together a group of designers and engineers and worked with the Saab Brand Center team in Sweden to develop this crossover. I hope you, like me, are excited about the result, which clearly expresses our Scandinavian values and DNA. A concept that we believe will resonate with our potential customers.
So what makes it Scandinavian? What sets it apart from other vehicles? It’s the simplicity of form, with clean and uncluttered lines and a characteristic ‘ice-block’ surface and lighting themes. The progressive interior design elements also draw inspiration from Saab’s Aero X concept.
But we stretched a bit further and hosted “guest” designers on this vehicle. The innovative load-carrying solutions, including a unique ski equipment stowage system, was developed in co-operation with mountain sports specialists Salomon. I can tell you this comes in quit handy in my country that for a large part of the year is covered with snow…
Efficient use of our resources and respect for our nature are deeply rooted in the Swedish culture. For 30 years Saab has been seeking out the highest levels of performance from smaller, more efficient engines without sacrificing power. It’s part of our thinking as Swedes and this leadership position now gives us a huge competitive advantage as many of our competitors currently are looking for ways to ‘right-size’ their engines.
The 9-4X BioPower Concept has a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter BioPower turbo engine that delivers an exceptional level of power efficiency - 300 hp and strong torque of 400 Nm (295 ft.lbs.). In combination with our state-of-the-art Saab XWD ('cross wheel drive') system that is developed in Sweden, this advanced powertrain promises to make driving to your destination as enjoyable as the impending adventure itself. And you can do that with a clean conscious…
The 9-4X BioPower Concept is a first and important signal of our ambition to expand our product range. But it’s more than that. It shows where we want to take our brand. And we’ll take it beyond many people’s imagination. Expect a lot more from us. Perhaps even sooner than you might think….

The HUMMER HX Concept
Photos of the HX concept and lots more from NAIAS on Flickr
By Carl Zipfel, Exterior Design Director
HUMMER Design Studio
Hello, my name is Carl Zipfel. I’m the Exterior Design Director of the HUMMER Design Studio. As you may know, the HUMMER HX concept vehicle debuted today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. On Jan. 16, I’ll be speaking at the Autoweek Design Forum. The theme of the forum is “Designed for Fun,” and the reason I was asked to be there is because I work with the team responsible for creating the exciting, new, fun designs for HUMMER.
The HX concept is a peek into the future possibilities for the HUMMER brand. There are a number of imperatives we’re working on: first, to build on our position of “Best in Class” off-road capable vehicles, evidenced by H3 and H3 Alpha stock-class victories at the 2007 Baja 1000 and the H3 Alpha’s recognition as Four Wheeler Magazine’s 2008 Four Wheeler of the Year; second, to continue to evolve the portfolio with fresh, exciting, relevant new designs; and third, to maintain our commitment to develop HUMMER’s global relevance a brand that is available in 37 countries today.
Carl Zipfel and the HUMMER HX Concept
The HX is a compact two-door, four-passenger, open-air, extreme off-road capable concept. HX features a reconfigurable rear compartment that can transform from slant back to SUT to square back, any of which can be open air or fully enclosed. The HX is a hint at the evolution of the HUMMER design DNA. HX is all about leading-edge design with a theme focused on function, performance, adventure and fun.
And while HUMMER vehicles are designed for fun, the also have a serious side, with capabilities that make them the ideal emergency response vehicle. HUMMER has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide 72 vehicles for over six years to enhance the disaster response capacity of chapters around the country.
An important aspect of HX is the 3.6L E85 Ethanol FlexFuel powertrain. HUMMER is committed to the development of alternative fuel systems for the entire range of models we offer. In fact, by 2010, all HUMMER models will offered with a biofuel powertrain
I believe the HX concept is a fitting representative for the future of the HUMMER brand during GM’s centennial celebration year. We’re looking forward with passion and excitement about the future possibilities for HUMMER. We’re committed to the development of the brand, and as part of that, we will create new models that are relevant to the rapidly changing world around us. The future is bright. I’m excited about the work ahead of us and continuing to deliver on the promise of keeping HUMMER “Like Nothing Else.”

Malibu Wins Car of the Year

Lutz with the 2008 North American Car of the Year, the Chevy Malibu, on Jan. 13
By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman
Moments ago, the North American Car & Truck of the Year were announced at the North American International Auto Show here in Detroit. I'm proud and pleased to tell you that the Chevy Malibu just won Car of the Year.
46 independent expert jurors – men and women who review automobiles for a living – judged the Malibu to be the best car available in North America. That's honor enough, but then you have to remember that GM swept the awards last year with the Saturn Aura and Chevy Silverado. We've now won three of the past four awards handed out by this jury. I can't tell you how gratifying it is to get this kind of validation from the experts — it's proof that our efforts to bring the best cars and trucks on the planet to market are paying off.
We told you we were going to make the new Malibu the best mid-size sedan on the market -- one that wouldn't just be "as good" as the competition, but would be better than the competition. Well, we've done it; critics and consumers have been saying so since the Malibu was launched in the fall, and now the NACTOY jury has agreed.
And speaking of the competition, congratulations to Mazda on the CX-9, a fine vehicle that won North American Truck of the Year honors.
More details to come, but I wanted to share the good news with you while it's hot.

Cadillac Accelerates Into 2008
By Jim Taylor
Cadillac General Manager
Cadillac enters 2008 carrying a lot of momentum, and in the coming days we’ll be taking some big additional steps that I’m excited to preview for you.
Cadillac will extend momentum in two of the world’s most influential venues. This week we introduced the Cadillac Provoq Concept at the massive Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
Provoq is Cadillac’s vision for the petroleum-free future of luxury transportation, and a major statement on the development of GM’s breakthrough E-Flex technology. Provoq continues GM’s vision of the electrification of the automobile, but this time where electrical power is generated by an advanced hydrogen fuel cell and the only “tailpipe” emission is water vapor. This concept is a dramatically designed luxury crossover vehicle showcasing how E-Flex technology can deliver all-wheel drive performance, while supporting the cargo carrying capability and the accommodations demanded by modern consumers.
Included in the Provoq are some pretty interesting technological ideas that support the E-Flex system. The roof is actually a solar panel, which transmits small amounts of electric power to operate the car’s interior accessories (such as the audio system.) The exterior features “active” aerodynamics, such as louvers in the grille that open and shut based on the airflow needs of the E-Flex system.
Petroleum-free, emissions-free driving could represent the ultimate luxury. Overall, the Provoq Concept does just what its name suggests – it provokes a new perspective on how the electrification of the automobile can change the luxury landscape.
Next week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Cadillac will debut the much-anticipated 2009 CTS- V . Launching later this year, CTS- V is a car designed to enter the stratosphere of the world’s most desired and capable luxury cars. In Detroit, Cadillac also will feature the upcoming Escalade Hybrid and Escalade Platinum models, which extend the desirability of the leading large luxury SUV.
Luxury buyers want it all. This series of technically advanced concept and production debuts are a powerful statement of how Cadillac and GM will deliver.
The all-new 2008 CTS exemplifies the momentum we’re building. Since its launch in August, CTS is winning with the two toughest audiences – luxury buyers and critics. Sales of the new CTS are up 59.5 percent since September. CTS is Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, is on Car and Driver’s revered 10Best cars list, and it’s a finalist for the prestigious North American Car of the Year Award (along with the Chevy Malibu.)
As GM enters its centennial year, it’s absolutely fitting that Cadillac once again exhibits the full capabilities and innovation of GM. This is more than just tradition for us. It’s Cadillac’s role and responsibility. From Charles Kettering’s invention of the electric starter in 1912 all the way to the electrically-powered new Provoq Concept we’ve debuted today, we at Cadillac are again excited to show our vision for elevating the art and science of luxury transportation.

Season’s Greetings
By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman
I’d like to thank those who posted their congratulations on the last post about GM taking four of the six finalist spots for North American Car and Truck of the Year. Your support and enthusiasm means a lot to us, and helps us “remain calm” as we wait anxiously for the winners to be announced Jan. 12, 2008, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Malibu, CTS, Enclave and Tahoe Hybrid teams deserve all the credit in the world; in my mind, they’re all winners.
When the auto show rolls around, be sure to check back here for information and updates. We have a host of world debuts that I’m sure will pique your interest, whether you’re a fan of fuel savings or out-and-out performance. We’re going to have something for everyone, and we can't wait to pull the wraps off the concept cars and production vehicles we have lined up this year.
In the meantime, before we assemble here in Detroit for the auto show, there’s this business of the holidays to attend to. I know I’ll be enjoying the time with my family, trying (and likely largely failing) to break the Blackberry habit, at least temporarily. Please take the opportunity to take some time off and enjoy the company of friends and family this season. I hope you all have the happiest of holidays and a terrific 2008. See you then.

Evolving Saab
By Steve Shannon
Saab Automobile USA General Manager
Few things remain in their original state. Nature, design, technology and fashion evolve. Not always for the better, mind you. Two words: bell bottoms. But that’s fashion and not my forté, so I will stop with that casual observation. However, some things do evolve to become the best representation, yet.
Today, the Boston Auto Show hosts the North American unveiling of the Saab Turbo X. Aside from being very chicly designed, a virtual rocket in terms of performance, and a riot to drive, it’s the debut vehicle of Saab’s state-of-the-art all-wheel-drive system – which we’re calling cross-wheel-drive, which in automotive acronym land will be represented as XWD.
Saab XWD possesses all the techno-wizardry that will set it ahead of its competitors. The real excitement is firmly grasped in the ability of torque to be transferred between the rear wheels as well as the standard transfer between front and rear axles. There’s also an added bonus of pre-emptive launch control. Pre-emptive launch control is a nifty way of describing the system that monitors and reacts to the position of the throttle, rather than snooze and wait until wheel-slip is detected to react.
The Saab cross-wheel drive system uses the same vehicle sensors that are utilized by the electronic stability control system to monitor wheel speed, yaw rate and steering angle. Superb handling and driver control is maintained by directing the torque to the appropriate wheels as required … dramatically improving the performance capability of the chassis. This effectively tames understeer and oversteer, raises the threshold where electronic stability controls step in with braking or throttle interventions, and gives the driver more active involvement in hard driving situations.
Larger brakes and a special sport-tuned and lowered chassis have been incorporated to take full advantage of the cross-wheel drive system and high-torque powerplant of the Turbo X.
Available as a Sport Sedan or SportCombi with a 6-speed manual or automatic, the Turbo X delivers a sporty, all-wheel-drive performance package that enthusiastic drivers will truly appreciate. I do not hesitate to call the Turbo X the most satisfying Saab of all time.
The limited edition Turbo X hits the U.S. market this spring, starting at $42,510 for the Sport Sedan and $43,310 for the SportCombi. Order one today through Jan. 31, and you’re invited to attend the Turbo X Academy Driving Program on Saab’s dime.
Drive it and make up your own mind. I think you’ll agree with me that the evolution of this 80s cult classic gives new meaning to back in black.

Preview: Turbo X Enthusiasm
By Steve Shannon
Saab Automobile USA General Manager
I want to infect you with the same enthusiasm I’m feeling for the upcoming Boston Auto Show, which opens to the press just after Thanksgiving on Nov. 27.
You see, at the Boston show the ultra-hot Saab Turbo X will make its North American debut. Bringing the ultimate expression of Saab performance to U.S. soil is pretty cool in itself.
But now, imagine if you will, adding a recently acquired classic 1985 Saab 900 Turbo SPG, to the debut. Now that’s REALLY exciting. I don’t think I’m alone in my excitement. I fondly recall my younger days on the East Coast and seeing the first of the Black Turbos zipping along Wall Street, Madison Avenue and even on some university campuses. Saab really rocked in the mid-80s, beating sales records month after month, reaching an all-time high in 1986. Saab had cult car status. I can’t wait to see it again.
So, maybe it’s a little bit of “back to the future” (maybe black to the future would be more appropriate) that’s put a little extra spring in my step. Maybe it’s the fact that the limited edition Saab Turbo X is a superb modern-day interpretation of a classic. Maybe it’s visiting my old stomping grounds again. Maybe it’s just that Saab is a great place to be right now. Maybe it’s all of the above.
Should the “blog lords” allow, I’ll be back with more on the Turbo X and the Boston Auto Show later this month. Right now, I just wanted to share a little bit of my anticipation with you.

Something New From Cadillac
Troy Clarke introduces the Escalade Hybrid
By Jim Taylor
General Manager, Cadillac
Exciting news from Cadillac at the Miami Auto Show: the reveals of the 2008 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid and Escalade Platinum models. The Escalade long ago made its mark as a sales and image leader in the large luxury SUV segment, but we’ve come up with some improvements that we believe will continue to distinguish it as a forward-thinking leader in the category.
Going green is an important issue for Americans, and the Escalade Hybrid helps make our vehicles environmentally friendly without sacrificing the luxury and quality that we are known for. GM’s two-mode hybrid system is now available in the Escalade Hybrid, giving it a 50% overall increase in city fuel economy. The two-mode system uses a variety of methods to intelligently manage the electric energy for maximum fuel savings. The Escalade will, however, still have the capabilities of a full-size, V8 powered SUV; you will still be able to tow up to 5,800 lbs and seat eight people comfortably in the vehicle.
The Escalade Platinum also raises the bar on interior refinement. It rounds out a full series of Cadillac platinum models that are characterized by handcrafted details and advanced technology. Also in the series are the XLR Roadster, DTS luxury sedan, and STS performance sedan. We bring an element of personal attention to each vehicle by wrapping and stitching the instrument panel, door trim, and center storage console by hand. The final effect is elegant and has a specially tailored look.
A whole slew of advanced technological features complement the luxurious interior of the Escalade Platinum. It will be the first SUV to offer Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlamps, which use much less power than typical halogen bulbs and last up to 20 times longer, making them more practical and environmentally friendly. In addition, the Platinum edition will be the first SUV in the world to feature Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control technology. This is the world’s fastest reacting suspension system and gives the vehicle very precise body control.
I personally see the Escalade as a proud representative of our values at Cadillac. We are making strides toward continued refinement in material luxury as well as advanced technology. The new Escalade models combine these elements seamlessly while also looking to the future. Rest assured that Cadillac will continue to innovate and work hard to produce vehicles that respond to our drivers’ every need.

Frankfurt Report: The Opel Flextreme Diesel Concept
The Opel Flextreme
By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman
As I’ve said before, I’m more excited about the Chevrolet Volt than anything else I’ve seen in my many decades in the auto industry. This week in Frankfurt, we unveiled a European version of the E-Flex line, which we call the Opel Flextreme diesel concept.
Even before anyone discusses the technology, I really think the first impression the Flextreme makes is that it’s a great-looking car. Mark Adams, GM Europe’s Vice President of Design, told the gathered media that the Flextreme shows the future design language for Opel. Its monocab proportions fall in between the popular Astra and Zafira models, but as you can see, its profile is much sleeker. And when it’s time to install a car seat, parents of small children will appreciate the rear-hinged passenger door. In fact, it’s been so popular with focus groups that we are moving ahead with plans to put the FlexDoor system into production.
Like the Volt, the Flextreme is powered by an electric motor, with a small internal combustion engine to recharge the batteries if needed. In the Opel Flextreme, though, that engine is a 1.3-liter CDTI diesel. The car will be able to run about 55 kilometers (almost 35 miles) on one charge. Our research shows that will cover the round trip of 75% of European commuters. Once the diesel engine kicks in, the Flextreme will emit less than 40 grams of CO2 per kilometer driven, far below the proposed European Commission’s target of 130 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
And, as an added bonus, two specially designed Segway Personal Transporters will fit in the Flextreme’s underfloor compartment. This will allow commuters to park outside the city center and ride their Segway Transporters the rest of the way. In Germany, commuters in Bavaria and Nordrheinwestfalen, Saarland and Hamburg representing more than a third of the German population are now allowed to ride their Segways on the streets.
So we think the Flextreme concept, along with the Segway Transporters, can significantly advance clean urban mobility. We’d like to hear what you think, especially those of you in Europe.
UPDATE: Check out FYI for video of the Flextreme.

Putting the ‘Flex’ in E-Flex
Larry Burns
By Larry Burns
GM VP-Research and Development and Strategic Planning
At the Shanghai Motor Show today, GM unveiled the next iteration of our E-Flex electric architecture, this one configured with a hydrogen fuel cell system.
This is the same architecture that we debuted in the Chevrolet Volt electrically driven vehicle at the Detroit show in January. While that vehicle was battery-powered and fitted with a small biofuel engine powering a generator to charge the batteries, what we showed today features our fifth-generation hydrogen fuel cell system that, together with a lithium-ion battery, results in a range of about 300 miles. And that’s 300 miles of completely petroleum-free and emissions-free driving.
The fuel cell E-Flex is also plug-in capable, adding up to 20 additional miles each time it is charged. Its fuel cell system is our most advanced one, and it fits completely under the hood, taking up about the same amount of space as a conventional four-cylinder powerplant with an automatic transmission.
GM China Group President and Managing Director Kevin Wale introduces the Volt at the Shanghai Auto Show
The Volt that we showed in January explained the E part of the equation, and today in Shanghai we showed the Flex. It’s a demonstration, a proof point, of what we said in January: this architecture can be configured to utilize a wide variety of energy sources. It can use, if need be, the most efficient and available system in any given global region where it’s offered. As I like to say, that’s the beauty of it.
For example, we can obtain hydrogen or electricity from range of renewable sources, including wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biofuels. Or we can use more traditional sources, like natural gas, clean coal, nuclear power or even gasoline.
And that’s exactly what we mean when we talk about energy diversity. We’re pursuing several different approaches to alternative energy and advanced propulsion technology — and to lessening our dependence on petroleum.
You can learn more about the fuel cell Volt we introduced today. It represents, to us, part of the ongoing transformation of the very DNA of the automobile, and it’s incredibly exciting to be a part of it. We’d love to know what you think of it …

Let Me Tell You a Few Things...

Buick Riviera Concept Coupe
By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman
First of all . . . let me lay one rumor running rampant through the blogosphere to rest: I have no plans to retire . . . not June 1, nor any other time soon. This was clearly an Internet prank gone hopelessly awry — and not a very clever one either.
Second, let me say one thing about all the posts some of you
